A cross in the graveyard of special settlers in the settlement of Gornyi (now part of the town of Anzhero-Sudzhensk, Kemerovo oblast’). After 1931 the settlement was used for settling dekulakized peasants from Bashkiria, Moscow oblast’ and other areas of the country, and after 1941, German special settlers from the Odessa oblast’ and the Krasnodarsk region. The photo, taken in 1991, is kept in the Anzhero-Sudzhensk Municipal Local History Museum.

Description of exhibitA black-and-white picture of a cross with a background of a field and a small wood. The cross is five-pointed and is made of wooden bars. It is erected on a small mound. In the background are the remains of barbed wire fencing.

Detailed annotationThe settlement of Gornyi (now part of the town of Anzhero-Sudzhensk, Kemerovo oblast’) was used from 1931 as a location for settling dekulakized peasants from Bashkiria, Moscow Province and from other areas of the country and after 1941, German special settlers from the Odessa oblast’ and the Krasnodarsk region. According to some data, the cross was erected at a burial-place for special settlers near the disembarkation place for convicts in transit.
