Detailed annotationThe memorial cross commemorates the builders of the Kotlas railway bridge, i.e. the prisoners, special settlers and labour army workers who died between 1941-1943 while building the railway bridge across the Small Northern Dvina. It was erected in 2008 on the left bank of the river, next to one of the former camp cemeteries used by the Kotlas division of the the NKVD Chief administration of railway construction camps camps [GULZhDS NKVD]. The cemetery was situated on the left bank of the Small North Dvina, on the floodplain adjoining the railway bridge, on the side of Velikii Ustiug. In 1941-1943 the prisoners who built the Kotlas railway bridge (Object No.10) were buried here. Their names are unknown, as are the numbers of those buried in this cemetery. An estimated 5,000 people were buried on this site; according to I.A. Dubrovina, chairwoman of the Kotlas-based society “Sovest’” [“Conscience”], overall 24,946 people died during the building of the bridge. A cross bearing the inscription “Zhertvam Stalinskikh repressii. 25 000 zakliuchennykh, pogibshikh pri stroitel’stve zheleznodorozhnogo mosta na Severnoi Dvine. 1941-1943 g.” [“To the victims of Stalin’s repressions. 25,000 prisoners who died during the building of the railway bridge on the Northern Dvina. 1941-1943.”] was erected by an initiative group for the restoration of the Troitskii [Trinity] church, situated in the nearby village of Vondakur'e (chairman V.P. Zubakhin). Workers of the Privodinsk gas grid administration [LPUMG] (director V.P. Zubakhin) prepared the site (laying of turf in order to create an elevation), built and erected the cross, which was unveiled and consecrated on 30 October 2008. The site chosen for the memorial means the cross can be seen from the windows of passing trains. Visiting the memorial is very difficult as there are no paths and the lower river bank is partially flooded. Requiem masses are held by the parish of the Vondakurskii church (Photo 30.10.2008.)
