Museum exhibit /Newspaper “Severnyi gorniak” [“Northern Miner”]. 1936 No.20 (270)
The “Severnyi gorniak” [“Northern Miner”] newspaper was the organ of the Department for Culture and Education of the NKVD UkhtPechLag (Ukhta-Pechora Camp). It started to appear on 10.09.1931. It bears the stamp “Ne podlezhit rasprostraneniiu za predelami lageria” [“Not for Distribution outside the Camp”]. No. 20 (270) of the 11.06.1936 is devoted to an order (No.156 of 08.06.1936), issued by the managing director of the UkhtPechLag, Ia.M. Moroz, on awarding a medal called “Udarnik-ukhtinets” [“Ukhta Shock-worker”] to workers in the camp, and also to the preparations for the 2nd camp rally. A list of those given the award is included, which contains the names of civilians (21 – some of them being former prisoners), colonised individuals (12) and prisoners (9). The newspaper was discontinued in the 2nd half of 1937. This sample is kept in the Museum of the History of Vodnyi. Description of exhibit | An issue of the “Severnyi gorniak” [“Northern Miner”] newspaper, No. 20 (270) dated 11.06.1936. 6 pages: 1 double sheet and 1 supplementary sheet (lost). On page 1 there is a portrait of the managing director of the UkhtPechLag, Ia.M. Moroz and his article “Rastet industriia Zapoliaria” [“The Industry of the Polar Regions is growing”] (with a note that has been reprinted from the “Pravda Severa” [“Pravda of the North”] newspaper dated 22.05.1936). The following notes also appear on page 1: “Rekord tokaria Semikova” [“A Record by Lathe-Operator Semikov”], and “Gotoviatsia k vstreche 2 vselagernogo sleta” [“The are Getting Ready for the 2nd Camp Rally”]. On page 2, under the heading “Chest’ i slava geroiam osvoeniia taigi i tundry, nagrazhdennym pochetnym zvaniem udarnika-ukhtintsa!” [“Honour and Glory to the Heroes Who Have Opened Up the Taiga and the Tundra and Who have Been Decorated With the Honorary Title of Ukhta Shock-workers!”] is printed Order No.156 from the management of the NKVD UkhtPechLag dated 08.06.1936, concerning the award of the medal for the “Ukhta Shock-worker” and a list of those being decorated. |
Detailed annotation | The “Severnyi gorniak” [“Northern Miner”] newspaper was the organ of the Department for Culture and Education of the NKVD UkhtPechLag. Its executive editor for 1936 was A.S. Briukhanov. No.26 (211), dated 11.06.1936, was printed on the press of the NKVD UkhtPechLag with a print-run of 5,000. This issue is devoted to Order No.156, issued by Ia.M.Moroz, the managing director of the UkhtPechLag, dated 08.06.1936, on awarding a medal called “Udarnik-ukhtinets” [“Ukhta Shock-worker”] to workers in the camp, and also to the preparations for the 2nd camp rally. The list of those to be decorated contains various categories of workers: civilians (21 individuals, partly former prisoners), colonised individuals (12) and prisoners (9). The “Ukhta Shock-worker” medal was introduced by a Decree by the Central Executive Committee of the USSR on 04.04.1936. Altogether about 10,000 individuals were awarded the medal. The place where the newspaper was published is shown as Chib’iu, although in 1935 Chib’iu had the status of a settlement, right up to its re-naming as Ukhta Settlement in 1939. Ukhta was given the status of “town” only in 1943. This sample of the newspaper was given to the Museum from the archive of the “Progress” Factory, successor to the radium mine. |
