An official memo from the director of the Accounting and Distribution Section of the Administration of the UkhtPechLag N.K. Merkulov to the director of Industry No.2, I.K. Danilovskii, dated 03.05.1934. It bears the stamp “Secret”. It contains an instruction concerning the necessity of holding prisoners under strict supervision when they have been transferred to the radium mine from the investigative isolation ward of the UkhtPechLag (Chib’iu Settlement). The document is kept in the Museum of the History of Vodnyi. It was transferred from the archive of the “Progress” Electro-ceramic factory in Ukhta, the successor to the Radium Industry. Description of exhibitTypewritten, original, signature – autograph, instruction – autograph, a single-sheet document on one sheet of paper. Stamp: “Secret”. On the left there is the impression of an angular stamp (in blue ink) saying: "Upravlenie Ukhto-Pechorskim ispravitel’no-trudovym lagerem” [“Administration of the Ukhta-Pechora Corrective Labour Camp”]. The date and the issue number “1347” are entered by hand in purple ink. The document is addressed to the Head of Industry No.2, I.K. Danilovskii. It is signed by the director of the Accounting and Distribution Section, N. Merkulov (it has a personal signature). In the top part of the document the following is written by hand in purple ink the incoming No.”329/c” and the date “5/V 34”. The document reads: "V dopolnenie peregovora po telefonu soobshchaiu, shto napravlennykh k vam osvobozhdennykh iz sledizoliatora 50 chel. zakliuchennykh neobkhodimo soderzhat’ pod strogim nadzorom, chtoby prisech’ vsiakuiu vozmozhnost’ k ikh pobegu. Stavliu Vas v izvestnost’, shto za ves’ etot kontingent imeiutsia sled-dela, bol’shinstvo koikh napravleno na rassmotrenie v tsentr, poetomu vazhnost’ voprosa ikh okhrany i prisechenie vozmozhnost’ pobega priobretaet aktual’noe znachenie” [“Following our conversation on the phone, I state that the 50 prisoners released from the investigative isolation ward and sent to you need to be kept under strict supervision, so that they can be cut off [sic!] from any chance of escape. I notify you that there are investigation files for this entire contingent, and the majority of these are sent to the central authorities for examination. For that reason the importance of their detention and the prevention of any chance of escape takes on special significance”. In the bottom left-hand section of the Document there is a resolution, in purple ink: “T. Shnurkovskii soobshchit’ t. Vershininu” [“Comrade Shnurkovskii to report to Comrade Vershinin”]. 5/V 34” and the signature of Danilovskii. Next to it is a note – also in purple ink – “Secret. Report. 5/V” and the signature of an unknown person.

Detailed annotationThis official letter from the director of the Accounting and Distribution Section of the UkhtPechLag, Merkulov, to the director of Industry No.2 I.K. Danilovskii dated 03.05.1934, is a follow-on from a telephone conversation. It bears the stamp “Secret”. It contains an instruction on the need to keep under strict supervision prisoners who have been transferred from the investigative isolation ward of the UkhtPechLag (Chib’iu Settlement) into the jurisdiction of the director of the industry. In the document there is a resolution by Danilovskii dated 05.05.1934 and addressed to the deputy director of the Administration and Economy Section, Shnurkovskii: “Report to Vershinin” (position not stated). The document was transferred from the archive of the “Progress” Factory, the successor to the Radium Industry.
