Detailed annotationAn official memo from imprisoned geologist Il’ia Isaakovich Ginzburg addressed to the assistant director of the Administration of the Northern Special Purpose Camps Ia.M. Moroz, written on 31.01.1930 in Chib’iu Settlement. It contains a description of preparatory work on the construction of a chemical laboratory on the site of the assignment [komandirovka] “byvshii Gansberg” [“the former Gansberg”] (from September, 1930 – Assignment No.1). Ginzburg reports a delay in the delivery of equipment for research into radioactivity, and requests the speeding up of the manufacture of the necessary equipment (vats, vessels with perforated bases etc.) and also urgently requests that heated premises be fitted out urgently for a laboratory. In a postscript, Ginzburg says that in view of the absence of a fully-equipped laboratory he reckons that the arrival of an engineer, Bashilov, would be premature. It is known that the technology for the extraction of radium salts from underground water was being developed by the Gorchimtrest (Mining and Chemical Trust), and that its representative was I.Ia. Bashilov. The exact dates of the arrival of Vashilov at the Vodnyi Industry in 1929-30 are not known. The document was transferred to the Museum from the archive of the “Progress” Factory - the successor to the Radium Industry.
