Detailed annotation | The monument “Zhertvam peshikh etapov 30-kh godov” [“To the victim of the prisoner transit marches of the 1930s”] marks the re-burial site of the remains of dekulakised peasants, who in the winter of 1930/1931 were made to walk from Kotlas up along the Vychegda river to places which had been assigned to them as settlements. The remains of the 35 special settlers, who had been buried in a single grave, were discovered during the construction of a private house on the outskirts of town (house No.44 on Proletarskaia ulitsa) in August 1991. The site where the remains were found is 200m away from the route taken by the groups of peasants. The results of the forensic analysis, carried out on the request of the Kotlas-based society “Sovest’” [“Conscience”] (chairwoman I.A. Dubrovina), revealed that the remains had lain in the ground for at least 50 years. On 13 August 1994 a monument was erected on the grave, with the financial support of the town administration. It is a gravestone designed by A.M. Saburov that bears the inscription “Zhertvam peshikh etapov 30-kh godov” [“To the victim of the prisoner transit marches of the 1930s”]. There is an annual remembrance ceremony on 30 October, in which the town administration participates. (Photo late 1990s). |
