Museum exhibit /Certificate for Ju. Adomaitis
A certificate from the MVD Special Commandant’s Office, Komi ASSR, in the name of Jurgis Adomaitis (born 1912). Dated 28.12.1955, Inta (Komi ASSR). It was issued for presentation to the police authorities in exchange for a passport. It is kept in the Inta Local History Museum (Komi Republic). Description of exhibit | Original, single-page document, being a type-written form on one side of a sheet of ½ A4 paper. Personal data is inserted into allocated spaces in purple ink. The text of the document reads: “MVD Komi ASSR / No.4/74/”28” December, 1955 // Certificate // Issued to citizen Adomatis Jurgis, Son of Jono, born 1912, native of Shuklyalyu Village, Kibartskii rayon, Lithuanian SSR/ Lithuanian by nationality, so that, according to a Decree of the Government of the USSR of the 5th July, 1954, he is permitted to live within the confines of Inta rayon, Komi ASSR // The certificate is issued for presentation to the police authorities in exchange for a passport. // Commandant of the MVD Special Commandant’s Office, Inta rayon, Senior Lieutenant” [Signature, deciphered: “Boreichuk”]. The Document is authenticated by a circular stamp. The text on the stamp is in two languages, Russian and Komi: “Komi ASSR-ca Pytkössa Delöyas kuzya Ministerstvo / Ministry of Internal Affairs Komi ASSR”, in the centre is “No.13”. |

Detailed annotation | A certificate from the MVD Special Commandant’s Office, Komi ASSR, in the name of Jurgis Adomaitis (born 1912). Dated 28.12.1955. Inta (Komi ASSR). It was issued for presentation to the police authorities in exchange for a passport. Iurgis Adomaitis was arrested in 1945 and from October, 1945, was in a checking and filtration camp in Grodno (Belorussia). In November, 1945, he was in prison in Vilnius. In December, 1946, he was sentenced to ten years in the Camps. He served his sentence in SevdvinLag (Arkhangel’sk oblast') and then in the MinLag (Komi ASSR). During exile, from March, 1955, in Inta (Komi ASSR), he worked as a blacksmith in Shaft 11/12. He was released at the end of 1955.
A bundle of applications for passports is kept in the Inta Local History Museum. These are for individuals released from Minlag or from a Special Settlement in the second half of the 1950s. The bundle was found in 1990 in a rubbish skip in one of the yards at Inta. The certificate was attached to Adomaitis’ passport application. |
