Museum exhibit /Certificate for A. Stepanavicius
A certificate issued by the Special Commandant’s Office MVD Komi ASSR in the name of Antanas Stepanavicius (more accurately: Staponavicius, born 1901). Dated 30.12.1955. Inta (Komi ASSR). Issued for presentation to the police authorities in exchange for a passport. It is kept in the Inta Local History Museum (Komi Republic).

Description of exhibitOriginal. One sheet. A document consisting of a form typed on one side of a sheet of paper half-A4 size. The personal data is written in purple ink on designated lines. The text of the Document reads: “MVD Komi ASSR/No. [dash] “30” XII 1955 // Certificate // Issued to citizen Antanas Stepanavicius, son of Antanas, born 1901, native of Punge [should be: Plunge], Tel’shaiskii uyezd, Lithuanian SSR / Lithuanian by nationality, so that, according to a Decree of the Government of the USSR dated 5th July, 1954, residence within the limits of the Inta Region of Komi ASSR is permitted//The certificate is issued for presentation to the police authorities in exchange for a passport. // Commandant of the MVD Special Commandant’s Office [A name is inserted] Mikhailov [below that is a signature] /Position [inserted] Sergeant”.

State of preservationAlong the left-hand edge there are three holes for a loose-leaf binder (the document has been filed in duplicate).
 
Detailed annotationA certificate from the MVD Special Commandant’s Office, Komi ASSR, in the name of Antanas Stepanavicius (more accurately, Staponavicius, born 1901). Dated 30.12.1955, Inta (Komi ASSR). It is issued for presentation to the police authorities in exchange for a passport. Antanas Staponavichius was arrested in December, 1946. In March, 1947, he was sentenced by a military tribunal to 10 years in a corrective labour camp. He spent his sentence in the MinLag (Komi ASSR), and then, from April, 1955, he was in exile in Inta Region. He was released in June, 1956.

In the Inta Local History Museum there is a set of applications for passports for individuals who were released from the MinLag or from Special Settlements in the second half of the 1950s. The bundle of applications was found in 1990 in a rubbish skip in one of the yards in Inta. The certificate had been inserted into Staponavicius' passport application form.
