Museum exhibit /Pillowcase made in the KarLag.
A pillowcase made and embroidered by an unidentified woman prisoner of the Akmolinskii Camp for Family Members of Traitors of the Fatherland [ChSIR] (Dolinka Settlement, KarLag [Karaganda Camp]). It belonged to Esfir’Isaakovna Slavina (1885-1964), who was imprisoned in this camp from 1938-1943. In 1994 her daughter, Ida Il’inichna Slavina (born 1921) gave the pillowcase to the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” (St Petersburg). (Photo 19.02.2007). Particularly valuable? | Yes |

Description of exhibit | A pillowcase made from cotton piqué (top) and apple-green semi-silk fabric (bottom). It is fastened with three white plastic buttons. The top is decorated using close embroidery cross-stitch and multi-coloured cotton threads and four large medallions form the basis of the pattern. |

Detailed annotation | A pillowcase made and embroidered by an unidentified woman prisoner of the Akmolinskii Camp Family Members of Traitors of the Fatherland [ChSIR] (Dolinka Settlement, KarLag [Karaganda Camp]). It belonged to Esfir’ Isaakovna Slavina (1885-1964). The exact date of when it was made is unknown, but it was between 1938 (the year Slavina arrived in Dolinka) and 1943 (the year of her release). After her release, the pillow case was used as intended. After the death of E. I. Slavina in 1964 the pillow case was kept by her daughter, Ida Il’inichna Slavina. In 1994 she gave it to the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” as a memento of the camp. |
