A birth certificate for a child of prisoner M.S.Shutova. Dated 12.01.1942, signed by the head of maternity home No.2, Tomsk. Mariya Sergeyevna Shutova (1905-1999) gave birth to a daughter while in Tomsk transit prison on 02.01.1942. She was then transferred to the Iaia division of the Administration of Corrective Labour Camps and Colonies of the NKVD for Novosibirsk oblast’ (Iaia Settlement). The child died on 07.04.1942 in the Tomsk children’s home. In 1994 M.S. Shutova gave the document to the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” (St Petersburg). (Photo 17.05.2008).

Description of exhibitOriginal on a form, filled in by hand and the signature is an autograph. The certificate consists of 1 page. The document is on a typewritten form, filled in by hand in purple ink. In the right upper corner is a printed inscription: “Public Health Branch No.141”. Name of Establishment “Maternity Home No.2”, entered in writing. The document is headed “Medical Certificate”, the number 2177 is added in writing. The certificate is signed by the head doctor (personal signature illegible). The text: “Citizen Shukova M.S. gave birth on the 2nd January, 1942, to a living full-term baby girl”. Underneath is the date of issue of the certificate, 12.01.1942. The document is certified by a circular stamp in purple ink. Around the edges of the stamp is the inscription: “Tomsk Municipal Health Section” and in the centre there is the inscription “Maternity Home No.2”.

Detailed annotationA medical certificate for the birth of a daughter to M.S.Shutova on the 12.01.1942, with the signature of the Head of the Tomsk Municipal Maternity Home No.2. The text of the Certificate is: "Gr-ka Shutova M.S. rodila 2 ianvaria 1942 zhiv[ovo] donosh[ennogo] rebenka zhens[kogo] pola.” [“Citizen Shukova M.S. gave birth on the 2nd of January, 1942, to a living, full term baby girl.”]. Mariia Sergeevna Shutova (1905-1999) was arrested on the 11.05.1941 in Leningrad and sentenced to 8 years in a corrective labour camp. At the time of her arrest she was in the early stages of pregnancy. She went into labour in the Tomsk transit camp and due to the pathological nature of the labour was transferred to Tomsk Maternity Home No.2, where on 02.01.1942 she gave birth to a daughter. Immediately after the birth of the child they took the baby away from her and sent her to the “Maliutka” (“Baby”) Children’s Home in Tomsk. After convalescence M.S. Shutova was transferred to the Iaia division of the Administration of the NKVD Corrective Labour Camps for the Novosibirsk oblast’ (Iaia settlement), where she wrote a request for the return of her child. In reply to this request, she received notification of the death of her daughter. In 1994 she M.S. Shutova gave the birth certificate and the letter informing her of the death of her daughter, along with other camp documents, to the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” (St Petersburg).
