A photograph of a barrack-block of Section No.3 of Camp Division No.4 in the BelbaltLag (White Sea-Baltic Canal Camp) taken between 1936 and 1938 in Segezha Settlement in the Medvezhegorsk Region of the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. A photographic record of the construction of the Segezha TsBK (Cellulose and Paper Plant) and of the town of Segezha was made by a special section of the NKVD BelbaltLag Photographic Office and, using that as a basis, albums were produced that show a chronological photographic record of the Segezha Construction Site. The photograph was given to the “Segezha Municipal Museum Centre” in 1985 by the Room of Military and Labour Glory of the Segezha Cellulose and Paper Plant as part of such an album.

Description of exhibitA monochrome picture of a single-storey log building with a pitches roof. Photographed from the front. The entrance, in the centre of the front wall, has a small porch with an overhang and with three steps leading to a door. A sign-board is located on the overhang and on it there is an emblem (unreadable) and an inscription (unreadable). On the porch there are two men in working-clothes. A circular flower-bed, enclosed by a low, board fence, is laid out in front of the building. In the centre of the flowerbed there is a small architectural feature (it is not clear for what purpose). Part of an inscription is visible at the base of this structure, which reads “Delo doblesti” [“A Matter of Gallantry”], but the rest of the inscription is unreadable.

Detailed annotationA photograph of “Barrack-block of Camp No.3 , Camp Section No.4 of the Belbaltlag (the White Sea – Baltic Canal Camp)” taken between 1936 and 1938 in Segezha Settlement in Medvezhegorsk Region of the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The photographing of the construction of the Segezha Cellulose and Paper Plant and of the town of Segezha was carried out by the Special Section of the NKVD Belbaltlag Photographic Office. The person who took the photograph and the exact date when it was taken are not known. The album containing the photograph is dated 1936-1938. The barracks of Camp No.3 were in Segezha Settlement. They have not survived to the present day: in their place is the production area of the Segezha Cellulose and Paper Plant. The inscription beneath the photograph in the album reads: “ No 119/110 luchshii barak 2 l/punkta” [“No.119/110 the best barrack-block of camp section 3”] (the number indicates the number of the negative; the place where the negative is kept is not shown). The photograph was given to the Museum by the Room of Military and Labour Glory of the Segezha Cellulose and Paper Plant in 1985 and formed part of the album.
